Today, as it is the third Monday in January, it is the day we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the role he played in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The song in the above video is Strange Fruit sung by Billie Holiday. It was the anti-lynching anthem and it was first performed in the 1930’s. I would like to say that I’m baffled by the fact that we needed such a song less than 100 years ago, but frankly I’m not. Not when we live in a world where white cops can literally choke the life out of black men, get caught on camera, and still not be indicted for it or where it is a well known practice of white cops to drive black suspects around in a way that can result in them breaking their spines. At least those cops were indicted. Eric Garner. Freddie Grey. They may not have been hung from a tree, castrated, and burned to death in front of a white crowd that was more than happy to smile for the camera, but as sure as the men, women, and children that were lynched all over this country for a hundred year period, they were murdered by a white populace scared shitless of losing their control over any and all people that get in their way. It seems sometimes that as a country we’re moving backwards rather than forwards.

Romance novels have been a part of my life since I was 14 years old and one of my neighbors dropped off a laundry basket full of Harlequins. From that day on, my nose was always in a book. I started my first review site in 2013, but took some time off for personal issues in 2018.
